What changed in ecommerce in July 2026, and what should lifestyle brands do about it?

TL;DR: July was a quieter month than the last few, but two operational updates stand out for lifestyle brands. Shopify overhauled its Collections logic with multi-source rules and variant support. Gorgias AI Agent extended onto Instagram DMs and Facebook Messenger. Plus a handful of Shopify and Klaviyo quality-of-life fixes worth flagging before peak season.

Why this matters now

The rest of the year gets busy fast. BFCM prep starts in a few weeks, then autumn drops, then peak. July is the last quiet month to fix workflow pain points before the calendar tightens. This month's updates are practical operational fixes that pay back before the end of the year, not experiments to run in 2027.

Do this now

What did Shopify change about Collections in July 2026?

Shopify shipped a major overhaul of Collections in July. Merchants can now build multi-source Collections that combine automated and manual rules in one place, and Collections properly support variants for the first time. The update replaces years of workarounds where lifestyle brands duplicated collections or used third-party apps to handle catalog complexity.

For years, a Shopify Collection could only source products one way. Either fully automated (all products matching a set of conditions) or fully manual (a hand-picked list). If you wanted a mix, you were stuck. Variants were similarly frustrating. Collections could only surface products at the parent level, not specific variants, which caused chaos for brands where a colour or size defines discoverability.

The July update fixed both. Multi-source Collections combine automated rules and manual additions in one place. Variant support means you can build a Collection called "Summer whites" that surfaces only the white variants of products, not every colourway.

Why this matters. If your team runs a lifestyle brand with any catalog complexity, multiple colours, seasonal drops, curated edit collections layered over automated ones, you've been building workarounds for years. Duplicate collections. Manual overrides. Third-party merchandising apps that add complexity elsewhere. A meaningful chunk of that can now go away.

Our take. You or your agency spends real hours a week on collections work for the brands we merchandise for. This one update quietly recovers those hours. Worth blocking a merchandising session in August to rebuild your top collections from scratch on the new logic. Don't just retrofit the old ones. Start clean where the effort is worth it.

Put it on your roadmap

What can Gorgias AI Agent do on Instagram and Facebook Messenger now?

In July, Gorgias extended its AI Agent onto Instagram DMs, Instagram comments, and Facebook Messenger. The agent handles messages, product questions and order queries across all three surfaces with the same product knowledge, shopping assistant, order lookup and brand tone it already uses in on-site chat.

Until July, the AI Agent only worked inside your storefront chat widget. If a customer messaged you on Instagram with a product question, your team was answering it manually. If comments started piling up on an Instagram ad, someone had to work through them one by one. The July update fixes that across DMs, comments, ad comments, mentions, and Messenger.

Why this matters. Lifestyle brands get heavy social inbound. A single Instagram post with product tagging can pull dozens or hundreds of comments and DMs asking about sizing, availability, restock timing and shipping. Most of it is the same question in different words. Your team spends real hours a week on it. Automating the repeat questions frees them for the ones that actually need judgment.

Our take. GoodKarma runs a lot of Klaviyo, Shopify and Gorgias stacks. The gap in Gorgias' AI Agent was always that it stopped at your storefront. Now it doesn't. Whoever runs your CS or social team should block a week to configure product knowledge, shopping assistant flows and brand tone properly, then let the agent handle the volume from there.

Other updates worth knowing

A short list of smaller July wins that any operator on Shopify or Klaviyo should know about.

  • Automatic hreflang tags admin toggle. International SEO gets slightly less painful, no theme code required.
  • App-added annotations on Shopify analytics charts. Third-party apps can flag events on your analytics timeline, extending the annotations feature from earlier this year.
  • Klaviyo Flow Analytics, finally. Compare flow performance across channels and time periods, with proper period-over-period comparison.
  • Klaviyo Custom CSS on sign-up forms, finally. Proper brand consistency across line height, spacing and right-to-left text, without engineering.
  • Klaviyo conditional splits with multiple branches, finally. Splits in flows can now branch into more than just yes/no, which unblocks the flows that used to need chained conditions to model anything realistic.

Next steps for July → August

  1. Block a merchandising session on the new Shopify Collections logic. Rebuild your top three or four collections from scratch, not by retrofitting the old ones.
  2. Audit Instagram DM and comment volume from the last 60 days. Identify the top five recurring question types.
  3. Configure Gorgias AI Agent for Instagram DMs, comments and Messenger. Feed it product data, shopping flows and brand tone.
  4. Review your Klaviyo flows that were limited by yes/no splits. Rebuild with multi-branch conditional logic where it actually helps.
  5. Sanity-check your discount structure with the new Shopify multiple product discount logic. Delete custom code where it's now redundant.
